LET IT OUT

STRESSED OUT BECAUSE YOU HAVEN’T HAD A BOWEL MOVEMENT IN A WEEK?

What’s so funny about this? Actually, if you haven’t had a bowel movement for a week, not only is that not funny, but your stress is entirely understandable.  Nevertheless, it’s our job to poke fun at anything and everything, and that includes bowel movements. It’s a sensitive subject and one that could be described as “dirty,” or at the least, impolite. On a number of occasions I’ve pointed out that jokes about bodily functions always get a laugh, and this one is no exception. Let’s take a look at the solution to the posed problem, taking a “relaxative.” In the first place, I hope you realize that this is not a real word, though it certainly sounds like it could be. It’s really a natural mash-up of two existing words, “relax” and “laxative.” We call this kind of mash-up, a “portmanteau.” Since they share l-a-x, in common, it should come as no surprise that they fit together so well. BTW l-a-x, also happens to be the initials of Los Angeles International airport, a place that causes its own brand of stress. When you feel stressed out, it’s a good idea to try to relax, and when you haven’t had a bowel movement in a while, it’s a good idea to take a laxative. So it makes perfect sense that there would be some medication you could take that handles both situations at the same time. It makes so much sense that there are already several products available that use this term and it even appears in some dictionaries.  Just think, the word is on the brink of actually coming into existence. Gee, I’m getting all tense just thinking about it. And THAT’s what’s so funny!
