TICKLES MY FANCY

HOW MANY TICKLES DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE AN OCTOPUS LAUGH? - TEN TICKLES

What’s so funny about this? As silly as this riddle is, it took me by surprise. When I read the question, naturally I thought of the number eight, because that’s how many legs an octopus has. In fact, even the name octopus actually means “eight footed.” So I was a little taken aback or shocked when I saw the answer “ten tickles,” because I thought the number was wrong. A second later I realized the answer itself was a pun. The more correct name for the leg of an octopus is tentacle, one word spelled t-e-n-t-a-c-l-e. But it’s a perfect pun if you break it into two words, ten and tickle. Octopi, the plural of octopus, are generally quite small.  There is a type called the giant octopus which is shown in monster movies. Of course, if you ever got close enough to a giant octopus to tickle it under one of its tentacles, I doubt very much that you would cause it to laugh. Octopi are not known for their senses of humor. The only laughter you might hear is that of any companions who were with you who are laughing at you for being dumb enough to try to tickle an octopus. By the way, the giant squid, a cousin of the octopus is also a famous movie monster. Both have been shown to wrap their long tentacles around a swimmers leg and then either crushing or eating him or her. Let me point out that this almost never happens but the opposite, that is, humans eating octopi and squid happen all the time as these are both pretty tasty to eat. And THAT’s what’s so funny!
